These days everyone and their mother is aware of the importance of eating organic, exercise, and the wonders of kale. But what is the point of all these efforts if at the end of the day you slather your body in harmful chemicals? Well it seems that people are finally catching on that green beauty is just as important, and the Indie Beauty Expo is a driving force in helping spread that message.
For those of you who don’t know, IBE was founded by Jillian Wright, who while launching her own skincare brand found herself frustrated with the lack of support for niche beauty brands. She created IBE with the mission to:
Provide a platform to recognize, showcase and celebrate independent beauty, wellness, and lifestyle brands.
This was only the second year of the IBE, and the first time it took place in both LA and NYC. Next year they are even adding a third show in Dallas. Needless to say IBE has certainly fulfilled their mission.
Here are three brands that stood out:
Mother Dirt is trying to challenge what you consider to be “clean”. They developed their products in order to add and nurture the healthy bacteria on your skin, which can get disrupted with our constant use of soaps and shampoos. My first experience with Mother Dirt was when I read this NYT article about two years ago. I was so excited when I saw them at the expo! The idea of adding good bacteria back to your skin had always made so much sense to me. I purchased all three of their products, and I’m very excited to see how my skin reacts.
Pinch of Colour
Pinch of Colours table at the expo stopped me in my tracks. Chunks of honey comb and shea butter surrounded ten of the most gorgeous lipsticks. AND the packaging was on point. Sleek white tubes with nothing but their bright red logo stamped on the side. Pinch of Colour creates all of their products sans water, parabens, toxins, mineral oil and sulfates. Not only does this allow for a superior more concentrated formula, it also serves a larger goal: to conserve water. Beauty with a cause, thats they way it oughta be! Oh and I of course had to buy a lipstick to help support. I purchased a lipstick in the shade “Aria“. I am already in love, so I will be doing a full review soon!
Before my clean beauty days I used cleansing towelettes to remove my makeup. Since going green I have always avoided these believing they created unnecessary waste. BOX naturals has fixed this issue by creating biodegradable towelettes. Not to mention they are free of parabens, petrochemicals, dyes, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances. They also come in cute individually wrapped pouches so you can throw them in your bag and use them on the go. Which is really good timing since it’s August in NYC, and even walking one block outside creates some major sweat production 😛
This was one hell of a week for green beauty, and I cannot wait to see how much the industry will grow until next years IBE!
Who else went to IBE?
What brands did you discover?
